The newspaper everyday prints a picture of Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on the top left corner as a tribute to him as he was the father-in-law of owner of the newspaper Y.S. Bharathi. As the newspaper is owned by Y.S. Bharathi, the wife of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy who is the president of the political party YSR Congress Party, the newspaper is often criticized for publishing news in the support of YSR Congress Party and being biased against the other political parties.

Sakshi was launched on 24 March 2008, the first regional newspaper designed by the world-renowned newspaper designer, Mario Garcia. According to Price Water House Audit, the newspaper had an initial print run of 1,286,670.[citation needed]

According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, circulation figures released in December, 2017, Sakshi is the second largest circulating newspaper in Telugu states (Telangana and Andhra Pradesh) after Eenadu with a circulation figure of more than 1.09 million.

Sakshi began with 23 editions published simultaneously from 19 cities (in then Andhra Pradesh) along with the four metropolitan areas of Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore. This record was acknowledged by the Limca Book of Records. Sakshi was the second newspaper in India to publish all of its pages in colour. Sakshi is now available online every day with all of its editions along with the regional editions.[citation needed]

As the newspaper is owned by the YSR Congress Party, it is widely perceived as being always biased towards Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. The paper, along with its sister outlet Sakshi TV, is part of a recent trend wherein businesspersons-turned-politicians across India launched their own media organisations as part of a political strategy to influence public opinion to further their political interests.
